Featuring two paintings William Henry Jackson.(1843-1942)
During the Civil War Jackson served as a reporter and artist. In
1866 he traveled west by wagon train going to Salt Lake City and
then to California, returning in 1867. He made numerous sketches
of the places and sites along the way. After he returned, he started
photographing parts of the same areas in the West. In 1870 he served
as an official photographer for the Hayden Expedition that explored
Yellowstone. Jackson's photos of its natural wonders helped to persuade
Congress and the American public to make Yellowstone our first National
Park. The early drawings, sketches and photos of scenes became the
bases for his western paintings.
