SUMMARY:

Here is the book to introduce you to Thomas Jefferson and the Corps of Discovery and allow you to follow Lewis and Clark on their journey of exploration and discovery. The first section compares the nature of the Lewis and Clark Trail with the other great western trails that played a role in the history of the West. Next learn about Jefferson’s early interest in exploring the West, his famous Louisiana Purchase, and the exploration of it by Lewis and Clark. Learn about the members of the Corps of Discovery and the Indians who played significant roles; review the historical development and other political happenings that were interwoven with it. Examine the maps and information about the West available prior to Lewis and Clark’s journey; then read about the various journals and follow Lewis and Clarks’ official 1814 printed account as they move north up the Missouri through present-day Kansas City, St. Joseph, Omaha, Sioux City and on into South Dakota.

Then examine the route of the Corps of Discovery through the words of the explorers along with the earliest sketches and paintings of the whole route. The works of Catlin, Bodmer, Watkins and Matthews are extensively used and matched with present-day photos. The first pictorial portion begins in the East, goes down the Ohio River and up the Mississippi to the Corps’ winter camp of 1803-4 outside of St. Louis. The next section starts with their leaving Camp Dubois in the spring of 1804 until they stopped at the Mandan and Hidatsa villages in North Dakota that winter. The third section completes the 1805-6 journey from Fort Mandan to Fort Clatsop at the Pacific and then back. The final chapters contain a discussion of some of the books available and the various historic sites, museums, and centers open to the public along the route.
